Being Human: S03E01 - Lia.

After the tear-inducing finale of series two, Being Human was back with vengeance. Seeing George, Mitchell and Nina buying a converted pub in Barry Island, Wales, it was an interesting new turn in events for the supernatural beings, but we weren’t going to forget about Annie—with Lenora pulling off an amazing performance with just a camera to work with, we were to discover that she was going to be shipped off to a room, locked in and they key melted; the Being Human version of hell (an eternity with yourself), presumably.

Of course, the ground rules of the new series were set quickly, Mitchell being overly determined to get the ghost back that he even followed one recently-deceased man over the threshold of his Door and into the afterlife (Mitchell already, technically, being dead as he’s a vampire), where he was soon to discover a beautiful, albeit chavvie, companion and guide: Lia, played by ‘enders star Lacy Turner—and what a surprisingly good, and deep character she ended up to be, turning out to be one of the murdered twenty in Mitchell and Lucy’s (another vampire from last series) rampage in ‘Box Tunnel’ and able to use this to her advantage, pushing Mitchell over the edge in an overly emo-way that reduced the man to tears and revelations (and not just the way he’ll apparently permanently die by the hands of a werewolf!).

But enough about Mitchell, it’s time for the annual full moon and George, stupidly (but funnily) get arrested in a ‘well known dogging location’—we’ll say no more eh? Although it was due to the discovery of another young werewolf (characters I won’t go into in this review as there really isn’t much to say about them thus far) who had the same technique of using a chicken to keep the wolf ‘contained’. Moments away from transformation, Nina releasing George from jail as a loony, was absolutely fabulous, Sinead’s performance of containing the wolf much more elegant than George’s constant screaming… and then of course their came the, er, mating, shall we say? Although not seen on screen, thankfully, it was brilliant to discover that Wolf-George and Wolf-Nina did ‘it’ when trapped with one another; a perfect excuse to keep them both locked up each full moon.

Finally, Annie! Who can completely forget the gorgeous ghost? Not seen for more than about ten minutes in the fifty-nine minute episode, her reunion with Mitchell, the classic corridor run and hug, was lovely and her discovery that they were living in Wales ultimately smile-rific, not to mention George’s tears when they reunited once more, and of course the montage of her and the gang getting used to the new house, including the Hawaii-themed wall in the lounge-area.

So in conclusion, as one has to put in an exam or similar, Being Human came back with more laughs, more gasps and the best edge-of-seat moments than the previous series and it can be guessed that no-one can wait long enough for the next episode…

Now, of course, this brings me forth in true Doctor Who stylee;

Mitchell = 9/10 – still very much the same, back to the vampire seen in series one, but with the contributions of the second series to keep the character developing.

George = 9/10 – again continuing to be very much the comic relief of the show, he still has a serious-streak which is needed.

Annie = 10/10 – not that we see very much of her, but her tearful performance alone at the beginning of the episode is worth the marks given.

Nina = 9/10 – FINALLY part of the series, full time, it’s great to see Nina as a cast member and her sarky moments towards the other characters are well needed for a bit of relief from the tension, not to mention that dress…

Lia = 8/10 – a surprisingly good character! Very good casting to place Lacy Turner in the role and can’t wait to see if she returns again… somehow.

Plot = 8/10 – a few twists and turns, as ever, but wholly solid, could have done with tweaking, or redirecting, but not bad in total.

Overall rating: 9 out of 10. Personally, I can’t wait to find out who will kill Mitchell—with Nina and George already werewolves, and two new Wolf-y characters, he’s a little bit doomed, to say the least! ;)
